Just like 2,000 other Chipotle locations in the U.S., Mobile’s upscale taco stand can provide you with a wonderful and healthier meal compared to other fast food chains. Safritas, their tofu based topping that might remind you of barbecue - along with beans, rice, fajita veggies, and a slight upscale guacamole, you have a filling vegan burrito bowl, in literally seconds. However, be aware that this filling meal is usually around 1,000 calories and can fill two people. So consider splitting it with a friend or saving half for tomorrow.

Possibly Mobile’s best kept vegan secret. On Old Shell Road in the heart of residential Spring Hill, Reza Hejazi and son Mayron sell a remarkable array of packaged foods and wine from all over. They also prepare a limited but vegan friendly meal while you shop. We enjoy their Falafel, humus, Tabbouleh and Couscous. Sometimes they have a good red lentil soup. Reza comes from Iran and brings with him a chance to sample simple Persian cuisine that’s excellent.

Another national chain that can provide several vegan options. They even have a vegan menu. Their salad bar beats all the other places hands down. Extras like roasted red pepper hummus, quinoa & mango salad, artichoke hearts, bean salad and corn salad, and nuts separate it from your standard buffet style salad bar.

Mellow Mushroom carries Daiya cheese so pizzas can be made vegan. Just make sure to ask them to skip the butter and parmesan that normally go on the crust. menu includes a tempeh sandwich. Tofu and tempeh can be added to the pizza and salads. Vegans will be happy here.

Rice has many many vegan dishes on the menu including curries, noodle dishes, spring rolls and salads. Too many to list! The owners and staff have always been very accomodating and are happy to cater to vegans. They even have vegan beignets!

Sunflower cafe Mobile is inside Virginia's Health Foods. Sunflower in Fairhope is next to Fairhope Health Foods but owned by the same good people. Regular menu includes several vegan dishes such as tempeh or tofurkey reuben, peanut noodles, hummus, thai wrap and several other dishes. They use Veganaise and the daily specials always include vegan options.

Many vegan items on the menu including appetizers like samosas and pakoras, and main dishes such as aloo gobi, chana masala, and mixed vegetable curry. Note items on the buffet that appear vegan are often cooked in butter, so inquire. Chefs are always willing to veganize the many other vegetarian dishes on the menu including substituting coconut milk in place of dairy milk in the delicious vegetable korma.
